Since 2004, Mt. Pisgah Church in Miami Gardens, Fla., has been feeding the homeless at the Miami Rescue Mission. Once a quarter the Community Services Department delivers and serves food prepared by church volunteers. It is not unusual for 300 homeless to be fed at the Mission on the Sundays Mt. Pisgah is there. It is also common knowledge that when the word gets out that Mt. Pisgah is at the Mission providing their delicious food, the number of individuals served can easily double. The volunteers feel blessed to share a homemade meal with the men, women, and children who arrive for Sunday dinner.
However, needs of the homeless are more than food, and Peggy Joseph, new director of community services, saw that for herself on a recent visit to the Mission. Their new motto is, “OUTREACH – Serving, Loving, Giving,” and the 23 volunteers who came with her not only provided food to the homeless, they made a point of offering friendly conversation. In the coming months, Joseph plans to provide the homeless with hygiene kits, and has arranged for other church departments to take turns ministering in their own way to the homeless at Miami Rescue Mission.
Fifteen years ago when Mt. Pisgah started volunteering at the Mission, 24 churches from the Miami area participated in homeless feeding; now Mt. Pisgah is one of three churches left that do the feeding. Joseph wants those who are served at the Miami Rescue Mission to remember Mt. Pisgah, and know that they care. “If we are to be the hands and feet of Jesus, we need to act more like Him,” Joseph said.
