Luella Dietrich shares her personal testimony.
Located in rural Tennessee, the Brayton Adventist Church is small, but has a heart for reaching out to the community. With dedicated members and friends and the power of the Holy Spirit, they had a successful Vacation Bible School (VBS) program this summer.
The theme of the VBS was “Jesus My Trailblazer.” The children learned about God’s love for us, repentance, how to trust and grow in Jesus, and how to keep walking with Him all the way to Heaven. Beautiful crafts, engaging nature lessons, fun activities, and interesting Bible stories supported the topic each evening. A total of 17 children/young adults attended over the course of the week, some of them from families who were not Adventists.
As I was praying for this VBS program, I was asking God to lead at least one child to make a decision to follow Him as a result of this program. Truly that would make all our efforts worthwhile — and God is already answering our prayer!
While passing out VBS invitations in our community, I met a young woman in her mid-20s. She showed interest in coming to our house to learn about gardening and sewing. She came over one day, and, as we got to know her better, we learned that she was from an atheist background. But, she seemed to enjoy spending time with our family, and my mother invited her to come to VBS with us.
On the first night she came, my mother made a young adult group to visit the different stations with her. She seemed to enjoy being there. When we dropped her off at her house, she asked us if we had an extra Bible. We were happy to give her the one we had in our van. She said she had not really been around someone to explain the Bible to her, but now she had an interest in reading it for herself.
Two days later, after coming to VBS another evening, the young woman told us that she had been reading her Bible. She had started in Genesis and read past chapter 11 already. We encouraged her to continue reading.
It was encouraging to see how God could use a VBS program designed for younger children to reach one of His older children and inspire an interest in His Word. We are looking forward to seeing how God will continue to guide this young woman as she gets to know Him better.
