From April 3 to 6, 2025, Columbia, Maryland, became a hub of inspiration and renewal as Adventist nurses from around the world gathered for the Adventist Nurses Conference: Empowered for Impact, hosted by the Adventist Association of Faith Community Nursing (AAFCN). Held at the North American Division headquarters, the event drew participants from across the United States, as well as international attendees from Costa Rica and the United Kingdom, reflecting the global reach of faith-based nursing. Over four days, nurses participated in workshops, dynamic worship services, and thoughtful discussions centered on whole-person care, professional growth, and spiritual well-being.
Throughout the weekend, speakers emphasized the divine assignment of nurses, echoing the example of Christ’s mission in Luke 4:18 to “heal the brokenhearted.” Historical nursing figures, such as Florence Nightingale and Mary Eliza Mahoney, were honored as pioneers of compassionate care rooted in faith.
A group photo opportunity with Ken Shaw, president of Southern Adventist University, captured nursing solidarity as Georgia-Cumberland Conference nurses stood together in their shared mission: to bring healing and hope through Christ- centered nurse ministry.
One of the most impactful moments came during the closing session, when keynote speaker Seth Yelorda shared the “Buffalo vs. Cow” metaphor. He explained how cows run away from storms and suffer longer, while buffalo run straight through the storm to minimize the hardship. He charged attendees to be like the buffalo — facing challenges head-on with courage, faith, and purpose.
Conference sessions also addressed ethical challenges, self-care for caregivers, the role of nurses in global missions, and the power of technology in faith-based healthcare. From moments of laughter to silent prayers of dedication, the weekend was a meaningful experience for all involved. The conference featured a hands-on service component that united nurses in mission-driven action to support community needs in Maryland. The attendees assembled 98 care packs for women served by the House of Ruth, prepared 100 Easter bags and 150 cards for seniors and children, and tied 25 fleece blankets for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
As a ministry of the North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, AAFCN remains committed to empowering nurses to serve with compassion, knowledge, and spiritual integrity. Through conferences like this, AAFCN fosters a vibrant network of professionals who are not only skilled clinicians but also dedicated community leaders. As participants departed with renewed focus and deeper connection, they left ready to lead, carrying forward a legacy of Christ-centered care that uplifts, equips, and transforms lives far beyond the conference walls. Adventist nurses serving in all specialty areas are invited to learn more about the educational and networking opportunities available at AdventistNurse.org.
