During Black History Month, a unique Black history showcase was held to celebrate the diverse, unified ethnicities of the Southeastern Conference office employees.

This inaugural “lunch and learn,” titled “Africa is Everywhere,” was a one-of-a-kind celebration. As Jennifer Sankey, Ph.D., director of health ministries for Southeastern Conference, read historical facts about the workers, wonder and laughter filled the room.

Dayami Valdespino, Southeastern human resources director, captivated the attention of her co-workers when she shared her moving story of migrating from Cuba to the United States, and shared pictures of her family.

The employees provided delicious, nutritious foods from various cultures and displayed beautiful memorabilia. The fashion extravaganza was a fun showstopper as several employees dressed in beautiful, colorful attire proudly walked the runway to parade clothing of their heritage.

The full participation of the administration and employees made this first-time Black History Celebration an overwhelming success, reinforcing that diversity makes them stronger and more effective together. Nine cultures were represented: America, Haiti, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, Ghana, Columbia, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. In the words of Pierre Francois, Southeastern executive secretary, “Our diversity is our strength.”
