The Sabbath of July 23 was extra special for the Bowling Green Zomi Church in Kentucky. The pews were packed, and a joyful atmosphere filled the room as church members celebrated two very special occasions.

By the grace of God, three individuals accepted the gift of salvation through the public display of baptism. A huge reason to celebrate! The Bowling Green Zomi Church pastor, Thang Mang, also renewed his commitment to God by being re-baptized in front of his congregation.

Following the baptisms, friends, some who came from out of state, joined the Kentucky-Tennessee Conference administrative officers for the ordination of Mang. It was a beautiful service, and many praised God for calling Mang to the Gospel ministry.

About Thang Mang, Pastor

Thang Mang was born to a Seventh- day Adventist family in a small village in Burma called Kapteel. Growing up, he attended Adventist schools and later went to the Myanmar Union Adventist Seminary.

Mang felt God calling him to ministry three separate times throughout his life. The first call was through his parents; as a child he wanted to be a politician, but, hoping that he would go into ministry, Mang’s parents sent him to an Adventist academy. He resisted that call, and after high school graduation he transferred to a public university to study politics.

As Mang finished his first semesters in the public college, the Burma military began shutting down all public schools. Adventist schools remained open. Around the same time, God gave Mang a dream where he felt God calling him to go and study in the Myanmar Union Adventist Seminary. Mang completed his B.A. in religion, and served at the Valvum Church in Burma before moving to the United States and changing careers.

The final call took place while Mang worked as a businessman in Miami, Fla. After working for 14 years, Mang started helping the refugee ministry of the North American Division. Six months later, after intensive prayer, Mang finally decided to accept God’s call and become a full-time minister.

Mang has served at four churches throughout his life: the Valvum Church in Burma, the First Burmese Christian Church in Florida, Miami Zomi Church in Florida, and most recently the Bowling Green Zomi Church. Mang loves playing soccer, volleyball, and tennis. Mang says he is influenced by the stories of Joseph and Moses, and takes the promise of Isaiah 54:10 to heart.
