Savannah First Members Appreciate Voters

BY ruth baker

When Savannah First Church members noticed that large numbers of voters were coming to their polling location, they got creative and reached out.

Submitted by: Ruth Baker

The Savannah First Church in Pooler, Ga., made good use of a witnessing opportunity during the recent election day. The church has served as a polling location for a number of years, but the number of voters on November 6, 2018, far exceeded the number in previous years. The line of voters ranged from 300 to 700 feet all day. At times, the line wound around the aisles of the sanctuary in an effort to get everyone inside ahead of rain.

All of these voting individuals lived within range of the church’s new low power radio station, WYAW, FM 93.5, so it seemed an ideal time to do some marketing for the station and distribute business card size “invitation-to-listen” announcements inviting people to tune in and enjoy the station. Nearly 1,000 cards were given out.

The pastor’s wife, Vonnie Womack, and Carroll and Ruth Baker also distributed bottled water and individual bags of gummie fruit snacks to the hot and hungry voters. Several voters showed their appreciation for the church members’ efforts by returning with cases of bottled water for distribution later in the day. Voters often came directly from work in the late afternoon, and were in line more than three hours. They were offered small wedges of pizza as they exited.

The voting officials noted with amazement that despite the long wait, the crowd remained on their best behavior. The church members knew why. They had been praying all day that the voters in their precinct would be blessed from having been in the Savannah First Church.
