Workshop Presents Use of Social Media for Church, Communication

Each year, generally the first Sunday in March, the Carolina Conference Communication Department hosts a communication workshop for their pastors and nominated local church communication leaders. Every five years, a “Back to Basics” workshop is held, but during the other years specialty workshops are the focus. Recognizing that these are volunteered positions, the communication team tries to pick different areas to focus on continuing training to help equip the local church leaders to feel comfortable in their called positions. This year’s focus was on the importance of utilizing social media to help church ministries, with two special guests from the Southern Union, Bryant Taylor, D.Min. and Christina Coston, director and associate director of communication.

Taylor is always a hit with the attendees, as he uses his copious knowledge in digital media to give ideas to help enhance worship and meeting experiences in the local church. Taylor also enjoys the one-on-one opportunities that the lunch break offers him to help diagnose needs of the communication leaders for their church needs. This is his fourth year as one of the presenters and he already has his calendar reserved for next year.

Coston, while she may be the newest member of the Southern Union communication team, is also a former communication director from the Iowa-Missouri Conference. During her time there, she helped increase their social media reach by 119% and shared some of what she adapted for her former conference for the attendees. Helping to put the new knowledge to use, Coston had the attendees break up into groups at their tables and put a fictitious plan together for an upcoming event. This broke the gears free to start moving. One attendee expressed, “This is exactly what I needed — having things broken down to understand better what I need to be doing.”

If you have been asked to serve your local church as a communication leader or you are interested in learning more, reserve your calendars now for the first Sunday in March 2024.
