Conversion at Summer Camp

Phil Younts

Summer campers at Camp Kulaqua, High Springs, Florida, experience the joy of baptism in God’s beautiful spring.

The story I want to tell you is about the power of the Holy Spirit working in today’s youth.

I was in my office one afternoon at Camp Kulaqua when I received a call from a grandfather. I knew the grandfather, and when he said, “I want to tell you what happened to my grandkids at camp this summer,” I grimaced. I was expecting the worst, but I shouldn't have.

“My grandkids had a wonderful summer enjoying all the activities, the food, and their counselors,” he said, “but my grandson had a special, wonderful experience.”

His grandson told him that he met a new friend in his cabin he did not know before the summer. As the counselor shared cabin worship and talked about Jesus, his new friend said, “I believe in science. I don’t believe in God.”

“I believe in science also,” the grandson responded, “but I believe God created science.”

As the week progressed, they talked and listened to the counselor and the camp pastor as they shared Jesus with the campers. Then came Friday night, which is always special, and the pastor normally makes a call.

“When the call came, I knew that I loved Jesus and accepted Him as my Savior,” said the grandson. “I didn't need to go down front, but something compelled me to go down. As I stood there in front of the pastor, I felt someone take my arm from behind. To my amazement when I turned around, there was my newfound atheist friend!”

“I was wrong,” exclaimed my friend, “I need Jesus!”

The cabin of teen campers gathered around this young man and had prayer that Jesus would come into his heart, and Jesus did. The young man who came to camp as an atheist left as a Christian because a teen camper was willing to speak up and allow the Holy Spirit to use him.

Praise God for Christian youth speaking for Jesus! Wow! What a summer!
