For two local mothers, the arrival of their newborns should have been filled with joy, but instead, they faced uncertainty. They had no reliable transportation and no family support nearby, making the most basic needs feel out of reach.
Through a partnership between the Samaritan Center and members of Brainerd United Methodist Church (BUMC), some of their needs were met in tangible, meaningful ways.
Pat Cox, a member of the BUMC’s Nurture Committee, had been searching for a way to help two families with newborns when she made a connection with the Samaritan Center.
One of the mothers had never experienced a baby shower, and had gathered only a few secondhand items on her own. In response, the Samaritan Center worked with Cox to provide two complete baby layettes and diaper bags filled with essentials, including diapers, clothing, medicine, and other items for both baby and mother.
Because neither family had transportation, Cox and her husband, Bill, personally delivered the items. What they encountered was unforgettable.
“Tears, hugs, and total disbelief,” Cox shared when the mothers realized they had not been forgotten.
In that simple act of delivery, something greater was revealed, the love of Christ expressed through a caring community. Practical needs were met, but just as important, two families were reminded that they are seen, valued, and supported.
Moments like these reflect the heart of the Samaritan Center’s mission: neighbors helping neighbors, offering help for today and hope for tomorrow.
As needs continue, so does the opportunity to serve. Donations of baby supplies and financial gifts make it possible to extend this same care to other families in our community.
