A spirit of gratitude and unity filled Stuart Auditorium during a special Memorial Day service, May 25, 2026, as attendees gathered to remember those who have served their country, and to reflect on the blessings of freedom.
Darryl Bentley, associate director of ministerial, opened the program with words of welcome, setting the tone for a meaningful service centered on remembrance and appreciation. Soon afterward, attendees rose as the American flag was reverently carried into the auditorium by John Miller, retired lieutenant colonel.
As the flag was presented, Christian Cordero, pastor, led the congregation in singing the national anthem. What began as a solo quickly grew as attendees added their voices, creating a powerful moment of reflection and patriotism. The solemn presentation served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless men and women in uniform.
Following the procession, the congregation joined together for the Pledge of Allegiance. The atmosphere remained reverent and heartfelt as members paused to remember the freedoms they enjoy and the individuals who helped defend them.
Leslie Louis, president of the Carolina Conference, then invited active-duty military members, veterans, and families who had lost loved ones in military service to stand and be recognized. Throughout the auditorium, individuals rose as the congregation responded with warm applause and appreciation. Each honoree received a commemorative pin as a token of gratitude for their sacrifice and service.
The retreat concluded Sunday with encouragement, goodbyes, and gratitude for new friendships formed throughout the weekend. A few attendees ended the retreat with horseback riding, adding one final outdoor memory to the experience.
For many in attendance, the recognition carried deep personal meaning. The moment served not only as an acknowledgment of military service, but also as a reminder of the faith, courage, and dedication demonstrated by those who serve and the families who support them.
The congregation later united once again in song, singing “God Bless America” as the service drew to a close. Voices filled the auditorium with renewed strength and unity, bringing the special recognition service to a fitting conclusion.
Through music, reflection, and heartfelt appreciation, the program honored the sacrifices of military members and their families, while reminding attendees of the blessings of freedom, faith, and community.
